ALMA STREET

We thought of this extension as an oversize sculpture – a composition of three different boxes. Each box contains one of the new spaces (dining room, guest WC/ cloaks and bathroom).

A top lit glazed light slot separates this addition from the Victorian terraced house. This serves two purposes: bringing in efficient top light where it is most required and allowing the two parts, old and new, to be distinct. We propose keeping the historic rear wall entirely in stock brick. Standing on the threshold of the dining room and looking up you will be able to read the old external wall from top to bottom.

Externally the three cubes are to be rendered in a solid natural render, with expansion gaps accentuating the joints between the volumes.
