This inner city high density Victorian mansion block presented us with the typical challenges: The apartment had a convoluted floor plan with long corridors and dingy rooms. Our approach has been to create a large and light open reception space immediately adjacent to the entrance. The walls between two rooms and between the corridor were to be removed.
Our investigation of the structure revealed that the corridor walls of the six floor above rested upon each other. Our response was to build a wonderfully robust steel framed colonnade between corridor and reception space. Whilst the corridor remains a circulation zone it is now well lit and perceived as being part of a large and beautiful main reception space. The robust steel structure brings a raw industrial aesthetic to this manicured and Victorian block.
